15 Things You Have to Do in the Magdalen Islands (a.k.a. Îles-de-la-Madeleine)

The lighthouse at Cap Alright

The Magdalen Islands, or Îles-de-la-Madeleine, are in my opinion Canada’s best-hidden gem and are located in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This stunning archipelago is known for its breathtaking landscapes, featuring red cliffs, white sandy beaches, and rolling green hills. The islands are rich in culture, with a unique blend of Acadian, French and English heritage, reflected in the warm hospitality and vibrant traditions of the local population. If you’ve read the About section of my website, you probably know that I’ve been coming here since I was born because my mom’s family lives here. It's a place that feels like home, filled with countless memories and endless adventures.

1- Sunbathe at One of the Islands’ Best Beaches

Spend your days soaking up the sun on some of the islands' most famous beaches like Sandy Hook, Pointe-aux-Loups, and Old Harry. For a comprehensive guide to the archipelago’s best beaches, check out my other blog article dedicated to the topic: Magdalen Islands Best Beaches.

2- Spend a Day on the Water to Visit Entry Island

Take a boat trip to Entry Island, the only inhabited island that’s not connected to the rest of the archipelago by land. Explore the charming village, hike to the top of Big Hill for a panoramic view, and enjoy the serene atmosphere.

3- Splurge at One of the Local Restaurants

Treat yourself to a culinary feast at one of the islands' top restaurants. Enjoy fresh seafood, including the famous Magdalen Islands lobster, and savour the flavours of local cuisine. Some of my favourites are: Les Pas Perdus, Quai 360, Eva and Millerand.

4- Spend an Afternoon Shopping on La Grave

Wander through the historic La Grave district, where you’ll find quaint boutiques, artisan shops, and galleries. It’s the perfect place to pick up unique souvenirs and local crafts. If you’re hungry, you’ll find some little canteens and cafes such as the Café de la Grave and Effet Mer.

5- Go Kayaking or SUP Boarding

Experience the beauty of the islands from the water by renting a kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Paddle through the crystal-clear waters, explore sea caves, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The best spots to do that would be the Parc de Gros-Cap, the cliffs at Cap Alright, or a sunset adventure in Belle Anse or Pointe-aux-Loups.

6- Watch the Sunset in an Epic Location

Speaking of sunset, make sure to catch as many as you can at one of the island’s best vantage points. Whether it’s from a beach, a cliff, or a lighthouse, the views are guaranteed to be spectacular. My personal favourites would be: Borgot Lighthouse, Belle Anse, Auberge Paradis Bleu, À l’Abri de la Tempête brewery and Pointe-aux-Loups beach.

7- Try the Local Cheeses and Go for a Picnic

Pick up some delicious local cheeses and head to a scenic spot for a picnic. The islands are home to some excellent cheese producers like Fromagerie Pied de Vent and Fromagerie Les Biquettes à l’Air, making this a must-do activity for food lovers.

8- Stay at the Youth Hostel Paradis Bleu

For a budget-friendly and social accommodation option, stay at the Paradis Bleu youth hostel. It’s a great place to meet fellow travellers and share stories of your island adventures. They often host events and activities, and during the summer months you can take a morning yoga class on their beautiful deck.

9- Enjoy a Good Cup of Coffee

Visit one of the cozy cafés on the islands and savour a delicious cup of coffee. It’s the perfect way to start your day or take a relaxing break. Some of my favourite spots are Îlot, Cindyhook & les Lupins.

10- Try Out Kitesurfing

If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, try kitesurfing on one of the islands' lagoons on a windy day. It’s a popular activity here, and there are a few schools offering lessons for beginners, like Aérosport.

11- Go on a Little Hike to Île Boudreau

Go for a walk to Île Boudreau, a small island connected to the archipelago by a tiny dune. It’s a beautiful spot for walking, exploring natural clay deposits, and enjoying the tranquillity of nature.

12- Climb to the Top of a Mountain

For stunning views of the islands, hike to the top of one of the local mountains. The Butte Ronde offers one of the best vantage points and is a rewarding climb. Butte des Demoiselles is also an amazing option and I recommend visiting at sunset. Make sure to grab a bite from Cantine des Demoiselles before heading there!

13- Go Fat Biking or ATV Riding on the Beach

Experience the thrill of riding a fat bike or ATV on the beach. It’s a fun and adventurous way to explore the coastline and enjoy the outdoors.

14- Get the Fun Going at One of the Local Bars

Enjoy the vibrant nightlife at one of the local bars. Whether you’re looking for live music, dancing, or just a place to relax with a drink, the islands have plenty of options to keep you entertained. Some of my favourites are: La Shed & L’Abri de la Tempête.

15- Chase the Islands’ Lighthouses

The Magdalen Islands are home to several picturesque lighthouses. Spend a day visiting these historic landmarks, each offering its own unique charm and spectacular views. There are three that are absolutely stunning and these are: Cap Alright, Borgot and Anse à la Cabane Lighthouses.

Explore these activities and more to make the most of your visit to the Magdalen Islands. With its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, the archipelago is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories.
