A Weekend in the Niagara Region

Having lived in Toronto for a little while, and with my sister still living there, I make regular visits to the Big Smoke. One of the surrounding areas I’m always eager to visit is the Niagara region! Located just a short drive from Toronto, Niagara is an enchanting destination that offers a myriad of experiences, from the jaw-dropping Niagara Falls to the charming wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Let's dive right into the top things to do during a weekend in this beautiful area!

A Weekend in Niagara

Visit Niagara Falls

A visit to Niagara Falls is an absolute must! Whether it's spring, summer, fall, or winter, the waterfalls always leave a lasting impression. Witness the sheer power and grandeur of the cascading falls, and feel the mist on your face as you explore the area. Don't forget to take a boat tour for an up-close and personal encounter with this natural wonder.

Wander around the streets of Niagara-on-the-Lake

Venture into the quaint town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Stroll along the charming streets lined with boutique shops, art galleries, and cozy cafés like Balzac’s. The town's historic architecture and floral displays create a lovely atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely morning walk.

Stay at the Riverbend Inn

For a truly enchanting experience, book a stay at the Riverbend Inn. Nestled amidst vineyards and gardens, this old farm house exudes elegance and tranquillity. Unwind in one of their cozy rooms, savor gourmet meals at their restaurant, and take in the stunning views of the surrounding countryside. It's the perfect retreat after a day of exploration.

Fun fact: each room is named after a wine variety!

Dine at Kitchen76

Treat your taste buds to a culinary delight at Kitchen76, located in the heart of Two Sisters Vineyard. This Italian-inspired restaurant offers a farm-to-table experience, with an emphasis on fresh and locally sourced ingredients. From their delectable pasta dishes to their mouthwatering desserts, every bite is a celebration of flavors.

Do a wine and cheese tasting at Château des Charmes

Indulge in the region's renowned wine culture by visiting the Château des Charmes. Take a tour of the vineyard, learn about the winemaking process, and sample a variety of their award-winning wines. Pair your wine tasting with a selection of artisanal cheeses for a truly exquisite experience.

If you’re a wine lover like me, note that there are numerous vineyards you can visit in the area. Most hotels offer bike rentals so you can visit multiple without having to worry about driving. Some of the most popular include: Peller, Trius, Pillitteri, Stratus, Konzelmann, Ravine and Jackson-Triggs.

Walk along Mississauga Beach

Take a leisurely walk along the Foreshore Walk near Mississauga Beach. The serene waterfront offers breathtaking views of Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline (on a clear day).

Check out the cherry blossoms at McFarland Park

If you happen to visit in the spring, make sure to check out the cherry blossoms at McFarland Park. Witness the magical transformation of the park as the cherry trees bloom, painting the landscape in hues of pink and white. Pack a picnic and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.
