Montmartre and its Surroundings

Paris is always a good idea.
— Audrey Hepburn

As an eternal dreamer and a hopeless romantic, it is probably no surprise to anyone that my favourite city is Paris (a.k.a. the city of love).

I have been to the French capital over twenty times now, and I have also lived there for almost two consecutive years. I have seen it through rain and shine and experienced every season, with a slight preference for Spring and its beautiful cherry blossoms all around the city. Ever since I came back to Canada last year, I feel like there’s still a part of me that perpetually lives there, constantly calling me to go back.

A lot has happened during my time there. I’ve met wonderful people, some of them have become very close friends. I have been to university, worked as a hostess, been out until very late at night (or early in the morning!), drank at cafés, got lost in public transportation, left on impromptu vacation across Europe, and I could go on and on...

Today, I want to tell you more about my favourite neighbourhood in Paris: Montmartre. Every time I'm in the capital, I make sure to go there at least once. This little gem is located in the 18th arrondissement. It is a large hill on which stands the Sacré-Coeur basilica. You can reach the top of the hill either by climbing up the stairs or by taking the funicular. I do not recommend driving there, as streets are for the most part one-way, steep and narrow. It is also very hard to find parking and it can get pretty crowded, especially during day time.

There are many reasons why this is my favourite spot in town.

1. Breathtaking Panoramic Views

It always leaves me speechless.

2. Architecture

Once you get on top, I encourage you to visit the basilica, this roman catholic church designed by Paul Abadie.

3. Paintings

Then, if you walk left from the basilica, you will come across Place du Tertre, a charming square where painters, portraitists and caricaturists showcase and sell their art. Picasso, Modigliani, Van Gogh and many other famous artists have contributed to its popularity.

4. Cobblestone Streets

I grew up in the middle of nature so sometimes I feel a little overwhelmed in the city, which is why I like wandering around the charming streets of Montmartre.

*Also, did you know that there's a hidden vineyard (Clos Montmartre) on the hill?

5. Moulin Rouge Nearby

I always like to finish my day trips to Montmartre by walking down to Pigalle & the Moulin Rouge, a must-do.
