Top 15 Things to Do in Laos: A Journey Through Nature, Culture, and Cuisine
Laos is often overshadowed by its Southeast Asian neighbours, but those who take the time to explore this landlocked gem are rewarded with breathtaking landscapes, rich traditions, and some of the warmest hospitality in the region. Whether you're a nature lover, a foodie, or someone seeking cultural immersion, Laos has something for you. Here’s my list of the top experiences you shouldn't miss.
Luang Prabang – A City of Timeless Charm
Luang Prabang, the cultural heart of Laos, is a UNESCO-listed city where monks in saffron robes walk the quiet streets at dawn and golden temples glisten in the sunlight.
1. Have Breakfast at the Rice Farm Café
Start your day at this peaceful café, set within the rice paddies. Enjoy a fresh, organic breakfast while watching the serene surroundings. The setting is so peaceful, and the food is yummy.
2. Watch the Sunset from Phousi Hill
A must-do in Luang Prabang, climbing Phousi Hill rewards you with panoramic views of the city, the Mekong River, and the surrounding mountains. It’s a bit of a climb, but the sunset is worth it.
3. Enjoy Lunch at Bouang Asian Eatery
This cozy eatery serves up creative Asian fusion dishes with a Laotian twist. The fresh ingredients and colourful plating make it a favorite among travellers.
4. Treat Yourself to Dinner at Little Lao Culture Bar
End your day with an intimate dining experience featuring authentic Laotian flavours. The cocktails are also excellent, making it a great spot for a relaxed evening. They have an upstairs bar for those who’d like to continue the night after dinner.
5. Spend the Morning at Kuang Si Waterfall
Arguably the most beautiful waterfall in Laos, Kuang Si is known for its turquoise pools and multi-tiered cascades. Arrive early to enjoy the tranquility before the crowds roll in.
6. Have Coffee or Breakfast by the River at Saffron
Saffron Café supports local coffee farmers while serving some of the best brews in town. Sit by the Mekong River and enjoy the morning views.
7. Witness the Morning Alms
One of the most humbling experiences in Laos, the morning alms procession sees hundreds of monks collecting offerings from locals. If you participate, do so respectfully—cover your shoulders and knees, and avoid flash photography.
Vang Vieng – Adventure in the Karst Mountains
Surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and lush rice fields, Vang Vieng is an outdoor paradise.
8. Stay in the Rice Paddies at ViengTara
For a unique stay, book a night at ViengTara, where you’ll be surrounded by lush rice paddies and dramatic karst mountains. It’s the perfect escape from the bustle of town.
9. Hike to Nam Xay Viewpoint for Sunset
This is one of the best viewpoints in Laos, offering jaw-dropping 360° views of the limestone cliffs and valleys. The hike is (very) steep but rewarding—especially at sunset.
10. Take a Dip at Blue Lagoon #3
Skip the touristy Blue Lagoon #1 and head straight to #3. It’s more scenic, less crowded, and surrounded by stunning jungle landscapes.
11. Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Vang Vieng
For an unforgettable adventure, take a sunrise or sunset hot air balloon ride over the limestone mountains and lush valleys of Vang Vieng. It’s one of the most affordable balloon rides in the world! Unfortunately, the conditions weren’t great when I travelled, but it was definitely something on my list for later.
Vientiane – The Laid-Back Capital
Vientiane, despite many unpopular opinions found online before my trip, moves at a refreshingly slow pace. It’s a blend of French colonial charm mixed with strong Buddhist heritage.
12. Visit the Beautiful Temple of Wat Si Muang
This vibrant temple is an important spiritual site in Laos. It’s known for its connection to the city’s guardian spirit and is a peaceful place to soak in local Buddhist traditions.
13. Admire the Reclining Buddha
Housed next to Pha That Luang temple, which is covered in gold leaves, this reclining Buddha is an impressive sight not to miss. Over the years, Pha That Luang has become a symbol of Laotian pride.
14. Drive Past the Victory Monument
Patuxai, Laos’ version of the Arc de Triomphe, is an iconic landmark in the capital. Take a moment to admire its intricate carvings, or climb to the top for city views.
15. Visit Ho Phrakeo Museum and the Presidential Palace
Ho Phrakeo, once home to the Emerald Buddha (now in Bangkok), is a stunning museum filled with religious artefacts. Right across the street, the Presidential Palace is an elegant French-colonial building that serves as the official residence of Laos' president. While you can't go inside, it's worth passing by for the architecture alone.

Whether you're chasing waterfalls, indulging in local cuisine, or soaking in cultural traditions, Laos has a way of capturing your heart.
