The Garden Island
Recently, a few people reached out to me to get travel tips about the island of Kauai, Hawaii. I then jumped on the occasion to go back to my photo albums from 2015, and look at my pictures of this breathtaking place.
Each island of the Hawaiian archipelago has its own unique particularities, and Kauai is well-know for its Jurassic Park sceneries. When booking your trip, I would recommend staying anywhere in Princeville (North Shore) or Kapaa. Also, renting a car is mandatory, as it will really facilitate your transportation around the island.
Here are the key activities I would suggest doing while you're there:
Exploring the North Shore
On the North Shore, you will find the beautiful bay of Hanalei, Queen's Baths, Tunnels Beach & Ke'e Beach. Make sure you go there when the wind is coming from the South or West, otherwise currents can be very strong.
* I encourage you to go get sushi at the Dolphin restaurant in Hanalei!
Hiking the Na'Pali Coast
The famous 2-day hike to the beach was not an option for my friend and I since we were not staying on the island long enough, and were not fully equipped for the adventure (ie. camping equipment, permit). However, we both wanted to hike the Na'Pali coast! There is an option for a hike called Hanakapiai, which takes you to a magnificent waterfall. This hike is doable within approximately 5 hours, but is not an easy one. It elevates constantly, is slippery and includes strong current river crossing by jumping from one rock to another.
Snorkeling
Kauai has amazing snorkeling spots, the best one being Tunnels Beach. Unfortunately it was extremely windy the day we went, so we couldn't even enter the water. We were able to swim in Queen's Baths during sunset, which was very peaceful, but that's not where you'll see the most exotic species. Alternatively, we went South and headed to the small town of Poipu. The visibility under water was great and we saw many different colourful fish. If you're an adept of snorkeling, you should check it out!
*For a nice lunch with a view, I recommend going to Brennecke's Beach Broiler.
Discovering Waimea Canyon & the West Side
The nature in Kauai is simply stunning. Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, will leave you speechless. There are many hike trails that you can do if you're adventurous, otherwise there are many lookout points along the road while you're driving. I suggest driving all the way up to Kalalau Lookout to get a view on the other side of the Na'Pali Coast.
If you have more time, I would recommend checking Polihale State Park as the beach there is stunning, and you will likely be alone.
Taking a helicopter Tour
A helicopter tour is a must in Kauai. It will give you a completely different view on the locations I discussed above. It really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I would recommend it to anyone! I personally booked with Safari Helicopters, and had a wonderful time!
Only minor down side about a helicopter ride in general: be prepared to get very nauseous, it isn't a smooth ride.
