Living In The Clouds
The French Alps, this chain of mountains mostly known as a popular ski destination, also has a lot to offer during summer months. These gorgeous mountains cover 6 French departments including the Hautes-Alpes, where I had the opportunity to stay. More specifically, the commune of Briançon, highest sub-prefecture in France (1326 meters altitude), is where I spent 4 days.
Briançon
The picturesque streets of Briançon are a pleasure to walk through. I would suggest visiting the historical center and having a meal at restaurant Le Gavroche, where you can enjoy delicious traditional meals and an amazing customer service (reservations are recommended). Parc de la Schappe is also a nice area where you can relax and enjoy the sun. Don't miss out on weekly markets (every Wednesday and Sunday) where you can buy local specialties.
Lac de l'Orceyrette
This little secluded lake is located 30 minutes from Briançon near a village called Les Ayes. It can be accessed directly by car, although it is recommended that you use a VTT or a motorcycle to get up there, as roads are a bit rough.
Col d'Izoard
This mountain pass connects Guillestre to Briançon. It offers breathtaking views with a peak located at an altitude of 2360 meters where you can stop for photos, or even go for a hike. We drove along this road by motorcycle.
Lac de Serre-Ponçon
This artificial lake was created in 1961 to prevent disastrous floods from causing more damage to the region. It is one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe (20 km length). The waters come from local rivers and are dammed directly into the lake. We didn't get the chance to stay very long, but there are tons of nautical and aerial activities that can be done there (i.e. stand-up paddle, kayaking, swimming, fishing, etc.)
Lac Sainte-Anne
Last but not least, we decided to go for a hike in Queyras Natural Regional Park. Lac Sainte-Anne is located 2415 meters above sea level near the commune of Ceillac, and can be accessed either by the camping of Ceillac (5-hour round trip where you also get to see Lac Miroir) or by the Chaudrionde Parking (3.5-hour round trip). We chose the latter as we were a bit short on time. This was probably one of the most gorgeous lakes I've ever seen. The bright blue colour of the water was mesmerizing.
