Copenhagen's Best Attractions For First-Timers
Copenhagen is one of those cities I’ve always wanted to visit when I lived in Europe, but never got the chance to. That’s why I decided to make it my top priority on my recent European adventures. It is known for several things, including its rich history, vibrant culture, and beautiful architecture. It’s also the city where people are the happiest in the world! Denmark as a country consistently ranks high in global happiness surveys, and its capital city is often cited as a prime example of a happy and liveable place. This is due to its strong sense of community, high standard of living, and a culture that values work-life balance and social welfare. It also has excellent restaurants (although these are quite pricey) and is a popular destination for biking.

If you're planning a trip to Denmark's capital, be sure to check out these top 10 attractions. Before you get started with your explorations, I would suggest grabbing breakfast at one of the cities numerous cafes (I personally really liked Atelier September) or trying the famous cardamom buns from Juno or Buka. Both options are sure to set the tone for a great day of exploring.
1- Ørstedsparken
This beautiful park is a great place to relax and take in the sights and sounds of the city. It's also home to the Botanical Garden and the Greenhouses, which are both worth a visit.
2- Manon Les Suites
This hotel offers a stunning pool and a rooftop restaurant with a view of the city. It's the perfect place to grab a drink or a bite to eat while taking in the view. Whist the pool is only accessible to hotel guests, the restaurant is open to everyone!
3- Nordisk Film Biografer Palads
This historic cinema is a must-see for film lovers. The decor and atmosphere are truly unique, and the films shown here are a mix of new releases and classic favorites.
4- Frederik's Church
Also known as The Marble Church, this beautiful building is a must-see for architecture enthusiasts. The beautiful neoclassical church is known for its impressive dome and elegant architecture. I would recommend checking out the stunning views from the top of the dome and explore the church's interior.
5- Nyhavn
This picturesque harbour is a must-see for anyone visiting Copenhagen. Ideally, try to visit at sunrise when there are less people, to get the best view of the colourful buildings and boats. Nearby, you’ll find Brønnum, a historic building that is home to an art gallery and a restaurant. There’s also the Kunsthal Charlottenborg museum, one of the oldest and most prestigious art institutions in Copenhagen with a strong focus on contemporary art.
6- Amalienborg & Amalie Garden
This palace is home to the Danish royal family and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. It's a great place to take a stroll and learn about the history of the royal family. If you get there around 11:30am, you’ll assist to the Royal Guard parade!
7- The Little Mermaid
This iconic statue has got to be one of the most visited attractions in Copenhagen, and it is based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. You’ll be surprised to discover that its size is much smaller than expected. Not too far from the statue, you’ll find the Kastellet fortress and St. Alban’s Church, both great places to take a walk and learn about the history of the city. The views from the top are truly spectacular.
8- Church of Our Saviour
This stunning baroque church is known for its distinctive spiral spire that visitors can climbed for panoramic views over the city (this is not for the fainthearted!) The church is also famous for its ornate altarpiece, impeccable frescoes, and unique organ. The organ is probably one of the most beautiful I have ever seen!
9- Christiania
Also known by locals as "Freetown Christiania." This autonomous neighbourhood is known for its colourful houses and street art. It's a must-see destination for those interested in their alternative lifestyle. Keep in mind that there are rules to follow when visiting Christiania (ie. not taking pictures of the residents and not buying or using drugs).
10- Reffen
Last but not least, this street food market is located on an artificial island in the city's harbour, and has food stalls with cuisines from all around the globe. It’d suggest trying one of their Nordic hotdogs, they’re super yummy! Reffen is a great place to grab a bite to eat and a drink whilst enjoying harbour views. After you've finished your meal, head over to La Banchina, a nearby beach bar that offers a relaxed atmosphere, great drinks, and beautiful views of the city's skyline.
Overall, Copenhagen is a city that has something for everyone. Whether you're interested in history, culture, or just want to relax, there's something for you to enjoy. I also forgot to mention, but Copenhagen is home to Gasoline Grill, which is very famous for its burgers. The original location has actually been built inside an old gas station in the heart of the city. Make sure to check it out!
