15 Things To Do In Canberra: A Weekend In The Australian Capital
Welcome to Canberra, Australia's capital city, where history and culture come alive against a picturesque backdrop. Canberra is the main city of the Australian Capital Territory, one of the 8 main federated administrative regions of the country.
It can be accessed by plane from most major cities, or else you could drive there if you’re from Sydney. The road trip took me 3 hours from Sydney’s CBD.
This city is usually not on most international travellers’ priority list of places to visit, hence why it took me so long to visit (3+ years in Australia). I think it might be because of its geographic position not being off the coast. While there isn’t any nearby beach, I can guarantee that there’s plenty of other things to do in the area, including tons of amazing national parks.
In this blog article however, I’ll focus on the best things to do in the city itself if you’re planning to go for the weekend, or if you’re ever on a business trip in the area!
1- Explore the National Museum of Australia
Immerse yourself in the stories that shaped Australia's identity. This museum showcases the nation's history, art, and culture, allowing you to explore captivating exhibitions and discover the essence of this beautiful country. It is completely free and I guarantee you’ll learn something about the country’s history!
2- Visit the Parliament House
This place was by far the best highlight of my trip! The stunning design of the New Parliament is something out of a dream. Every little corner has been thought out! Don't forget to capture the iconic flagpole and stunning views from the rooftop.
3- Indulge in Canberra's coffee scene
Indulge your taste buds in Canberra's vibrant cafe culture. INTRA, The Cupping Room, East Row, and Barrio Collective Coffee are must-visit spots for delectable coffee and mouthwatering treats. In my opinion, Barrio makes the best coffee, and the food from East Row was absolutely divine. No matter where you chose to go, you can’t go wrong! The coffee culture is pretty big in this city!
4- Discover the city's street art
Venture into Tocumwal Lane, where colorful graffitis breathe life into the city's laneways. Marvel at the beautiful murals and expressiveness of street art, which adds a warm and artistic touch to Canberra's urban landscape. One of my favorite murals is located on Lonsdale Street right next to Goodbyes vintage shop!
5- Go to Mount Majura Vineyard for a wine tasting
Only a short 15-minute drive from the city center, Mount Majura Vineyard is a great escape for the vino afficionados. Sample their exquisite wine selection, expertly crafted from locally grown grapes, and savor the flavors that embody the region's unique terroir. I recommend booking your tasting online ahead of your visit, since it can get quite busy!
6- Treat yourself at some of Canberra’s best restaurants
Experience Canberra's thriving culinary scene by dining at Rebel Rebel or Lazy Su, where bold flavors and innovative menus delight the senses. For more options, I have heard that Parlour and Onzieme also offer an amazing dining experience.
7- Visit the National Gallery of Australia
The various exhibitions offered at this gallery change constantly, meaning there’s always something new to see! Explore the gallery’s extensive collection, including Indigenous art, modern masterpieces, and international exhibitions. Engage with inspiring works that showcase Australia's diverse artistic heritage. There’s also a beautiful statue garden at the back of the building near the river, perfect for a mid-afternoon stroll!
8- Enjoy a drink at one of the city’s best bars
Uncover the hidden gems of Canberra's bar culture. I found myself really impressed by the charm of Bar Rochford and captivated by the inventive cocktails and mocktails at Monster. I also had no idea, but given Canberra’s relatively cold weather, most bars also have a fireplace, which really helps creating a cozy atmosphere!
9- Go to POP Canberra for shopping
If you’re looking for a gift or a little something from Canberra, then look no further, just go to POP Canberra. This shop is a colorful and vibrant marketplace featuring unique local products and designs. From handmade crafts to fashion, jewelry, and homewares, this shop offers a delightful shopping experience, allowing you to support local artists and take home memorable souvenirs.
10- Visit the Australian War Memorial
Pay homage to Australia's fallen heroes at the iconic Australian War Memorial. Reflect on the sacrifices made by servicemen and women through interactive exhibitions, commemorative ceremonies, and the powerful Roll of Honour: a truly beautiful place! I learned so much during my visit and thought that the exhibition galleries were truly well designed and grabbed people’s attention!
11- Take in the rooftop views at the Howling Moon
Unwind and soak in the breathtaking views of the Black Mountain Nature Reserve at the Howling Moon rooftop bar. Sip on expertly crafted cocktails and relax in the cozy ambiance of one of the city’s only rooftop bars!
12- Stay at Ovolo Nishi
Treat yourself to a luxurious stay at Ovolo Nishi, Canberra's most sought after hotel. With its contemporary design and exceptional service, this boutique hotel offers a perfect blend of comfort and style, ensuring a memorable and rejuvenating experience.
13- Go for a stroll around Lennox Park
Escape the hustle and bustle of the city as you wander through the serene Lennox Park. Enjoy a leisurely stroll and soak up the tranquil atmosphere which changes every season! At the time of my visit, the autumn leaves had turned yellow, orange and red and the vibe was super cozy. I have heard that in the spring, the trees are covered in flowers which makes for a completely different vibe!
14- Go watch the water jet at Captain Cook’s Memorial
Go for a stroll along the Molonglo River and stop by the Captain Cook Memorial Jet. This giant water fountain is usually in action from 11am to 2pm and it shoots water 147 meters into the sky, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.
15- Go to Mount Ainslie for sunset
Last but not least, embark on a scenic hike or drive to the top of Mount Ainslie to discover the best view of Canberra's cityscape. You’ll certainly appreciate the beautiful vantage point on the Australian War Memorial, Anzac Parade as well as the Old and New Parliament.
